National Weather Service Eastern Region History

National Weather Service Eastern Region was founded in the year 1870. The organisation has been active for over 149 years now. The former name of the organisation was the Weather Bureau of the United States. It was established by a joint resolution of the Congress which was signed by the president of the USA, Ulysses S Grant. The main aim of the organisation was to provide various kinds of meteorological observations at different military stations, located at the interior of the continent and also in other parts of the USA. In the year 1869, the organisation’s first chief meteorologist was appointed, known as Cleveland Abbe. Then in the year 1890, the organisation had become a civilian enterprise, and it was converted to the Department of Agriculture.
