American Eagle History

American Eagle was founded in the year 1977. The company has been operational for almost 42 years now. The founders of the company were Mark Silverman and Jerry Silverman. The company was launched mainly as a division of Silverman’s Menswear. During the 1980s, the company expanded greatly, and by the year 1989, it had almost 137 stores as well. The founders of the company started to sell their other retail chain stores and solely focus on the American Eagle brand only. During the year 1991, the company was losing money and therefore only opened 16 more stores by that time as well. During that time, the company was bought over by the Schottenstein. The Schottenstein already had a 50 per cent share of the company since 1980 and bought back the rest of the company’s part as well. And therefore, the American Eagle of the 21st century was born selling clothing for both women and men.
